CPRS - Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme

White Paper

On Monday 15 December 2008, the Government released the Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme (CPRS) White Paper outlining the final model and the medium term target range. The Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme (CPRS) works by mandating that every organisation with a facility that emits 25 kilotonnes of CO2-e or more per year must report and purchase a permit for every tonne of CO2-e it releases. This is touted to cover approximately 70% of Australia's emissions.

WALGA Factsheet

The CPRS will affect Local Governments, both indirectly through rising costs of energy and products or services and directly through waste management facilities.  In order to assist Local Governments to develop an understanding of the Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme and its likely impacts on operations, the Association has developed a preliminary fact sheet which covers the basic information as to what the Scheme is and how it will need to be applied by various Local Governments in the State. Further Fact Sheets will become available as new information is released by the Federal Government.

In addition the MAV has kindly offered to share information developed with relevance to the CPRS. Of particular interest is the Members Brief on the role of the CPRS in voluntary emissions reduction. This information can be accessed by calling Melanie on the contacts below or through the MAV website at www.mav.asn.au.

You can find the electronic copies of the Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme on the Department of Climate Change website at http://www.climatechange.gov.au/whitepaper/index.html
