Clean Energy Future Legislation
Emissions from landfill facilities
The Commonwealth Government has responded to issues raised by Local Government over the application of a carbon price to small landfill facilities with amendments to its Clean Energy Future Legislative package.
The Minister for Climate Change and Energy Efficiency, Greg Combet, announced that there would be no carbon price liability for landfill facilities with emissions of less than 25,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2E) pollution a year; for at least the first three years of the carbon price mechanism application.
The Commonwealth Government has released a Fact Sheet outlining the application of the carbon price on landfill operations. The Fact Sheet can be accessed here.
WALGA has developed an Infopage that went out to all WA Local Governments in October outlining how the arrangements will impact Local Governments specifically. The InfoPage also outlines information regarding the calculation of emissions in order to assess liability.
