Rural Landfill Working Group members appointed

In response to feedback from Local Government, the Department of Environment Regulation has prioritised the development of an Environmental Standard for Rural Landfills as part of its regulatory reform agenda.

A Working Group with members from Local Government and the Waste Management Association of Australia (WA Branch) has been established. This Working Group will aim to facilitate a consultative approach with Local Government on the development and implementation of the Environmental Standard.

From preliminary discussions with the Department, three Standards will be developed that cover the three main climatic areas in Western Australia where smaller landfill sites (servicing populations of 5,000 or less) are located. These areas are the South West, Mid West / Wheatbelt, and Northern WA. Engagement with Local Government will commence shortly  through a series of workshops across the state and presentations at WALGA Zone meetings. Local Government feedback through this process will be critical in the development of this Environmental Standard.
