Better Practice Recycle Shops
Recycle shops intercept deliveries to landfills or transfer stations, and are operated by staff who extract, separate and sort reusable products and provide community access to these products at a low cost. Scrap materials, white goods, electronic good, furniture and toys can be sold to scrap dealers, second-hand dealers and direct to consumers.
Recycle shops provide significant benefits for surrounding communities and Local Government, including cost savings from reduced waste to landfill.
For Local Governments considering implementing a recycle shop initiative, we have compiled a list of case studies and research for your reference:
Want to grab a bargain?
Local Governments do not need to go out to tender in order to purchase or receive materials from recycle shops, so long as they are worth less than $20,000.
The relevant extract from the Local Government Act Regulation (Functions and General) is as follows:
S. 30 Dispositions of property excluded from Act s. 3.58
(3) A disposition of property other than land is an exempt disposition if —
(a) Its market value is less than $20 000; or
(b) it is disposed of as part of the consideration for other property that the local government is acquiring for a consideration the total value of which is not more, or worth more, than $50 000.
Tip Shop tip: have an internal policy about the disposal of material from your site as an additional measure to make the processes transparent.
