Kimberley Waste Summit 2019

Summary of the Waste Summit
The event brought together high profile speakers and showcased local initiatives and opportunities. Participants were from a variety of Local Governments, State Government Departments the Waste industry and the community.
The challenges identified for the Region included:
- Distance to transport material collected to markets
- Lack of, or very limited, resources – including both financial resources for purchasing infrastructure and human resources to undertake activities
- Low rate base
- Data that was not very accurate
- High contamination rates for recycling.
The opportunities for the Region included:
- Isolation driving innovation and creativity
- Local solutions for waste which generate jobs and provide community benefit
- Local Government leaders driving change
- Celebrate what we do well and the good things that are underway
- Working together to achieve outcomes – Local and State Government, the community and industry (with opportunities to leverage private sector funding)
- Waste Avoidance is possible anywhere.
